Are you looking for more information on lip fillers before your first appointment? We’re answering some common lip filler questions below.

Lip fillers are a type of dermal filler or injection that adds volume to your lips and makes them look natural and youthful in hyaluronic acid, a natural substance in the body that increases volume, hydration, and fullness in the skin.

As long as you’re in good general health and do not have any oral infections (such as active cold sores), you’re a good candidate for lip fillers. Why would you want to get hyaluronic acid injected into your lips? Here are some of the benefits lip injections offer:

  • Restore lip size (the lips tend to get smaller or thinner with age)
  • Correct lip shape to make them more symmetrical
  • Restore lost lip volume from genetics, smoking, or sun damage
  • Increase confidence and self-esteem

Lip fillers are also less invasive than other lip procedures like lip implants and lip lifts

How Long Do Lip Fillers Results Last?

This question is one of the most common among people interested in injections.Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with a one-size-fits-all answer.  Onaverage, lip fillers last between six and 18 months. However, the specificamount of time your fillers last will vary depending on the followingfactors:  (The RHA and Versa that we use lasts 12-18 months).

● Metabolism (how quickly your body breaks calories down intoenergy)
● Age (younger people typically burn morecalories, which causes their lip fillers to dissolve faster)
● Activity level (the more you exercise, thefaster your body will break down and dissolve the fillers)

Ifyou like how your lips look after receiving lip fillers, you’ll need tocontinue getting injections to maintain your appearance.

Mostpeople get injections yearly, but you may need them more or less frequently depending on your metabolism and how quickly your body dissolves thefiller.

Lip filler treatments are relatively quick and straightforward. If you’re feeling a bit nervous before your first injection appointment, here’s an outline of what you can expect from your procedure:

Topical Anesthetic
First, the injector will apply topical anesthetic to numb the lips and ensure you feel as comfortable as possible. Numbing creams take about 15-30 minutes to become effective.

Injections
Once your lips are sufficiently numb, your injector will use a small, thin needle to inject filler into your lips.

They may inject the edges (known as the vermillion border), the curve in the center of the upper lip (the Cupid’s bow), and the corners of the mouth (oral commissures).

The injections won’t hurt (thanks to the numbing cream), but you might still feel a pinching sensation, and your eyes might water during the procedure.

Ice
When they’re finished, your injector may give you an ice pack to apply to your lips. Using ice helps to reduce swelling and the risk of bruising.

Monitoring
The lip filler procedure takes between 30 minutes and 1-2 hours, depending on the amount of filler injected and the amount of time it takes to numb your lips.

After administering your injections, your injector or a team member will monitor you for about 15 minutes to ensure you don’t feel dizzy or experience prolonged bleeding (some bleeding is normal).

You can drive yourself home from your lip filler appointment.

It’s normal for the lips to swell after you receive lip injections. You might be slightly startled when you see how swollen your lips are immediately after your treatment. Remember, though, that the swelling goes down, and your results normalize within a few weeks. Here’s a brief breakdown of the swelling stages and what you can expect after treatment:

  • One Day After: Inflammation is the most sever
  • Two Days After:Inflammation will reduce slightly
  • Four Days After:(Using RHA or Versa, most swelling is completely gone due to the larger HA cross bonds. Juvederm fillers swell for 10-14 days. Should that be noted or not?) Slight projection in the top part of the lip, but eating and talking are more comfortable
  • One Week After: Swelling goes down, and you can more clearly see the outcome of your lips
  • Four Weeks After: The lips have fully settled, and you can assess the lips for symmetry and size

Lip Filler Before and After Care

In the week following your lip filler appointment, avoid blood-thinning medications like aspirin and ibuprofen. Blood thinners can increase your risk of bruising and excessive bleeding after your treatment.

After your lip filler appointment, apply ice and take acetaminophen to reduces welling.

Don’t itch or massage the injection site. Don’t expose your lips to intense heat until the swelling goes down, either.
